How to observe the sacred Ashura Shareef

The naming of the sacred Ashura Shareef

The word “Ashura” is derived from the word “Asharah” which means “Ten”. Ashura Minal Muharram indicates the tenth day of the sacred month of Muharram.

It is stated in a sacred Hadees Shareef that “Do honor the sacred month of Muharam and the day of Ashura for whoever does so shall be honored with Jannat and salvation from Jahannam.” Subhaanallah! (Al Baiyinaat Shareef, Edition 238)

Duties to perform on the sacred day of Ashura

1st duty: Fasting on the 9th and the 10th of Muharram is a special Sunnah; one could fast on the 10th and the 11th too if one has genuine reasons.

Sacred Hadees Shareef: “Whoever fasts for observing the sacred Ashura Shareef shall be rewarded as if he passed the whole day fasting and the whole night praying for sixty years in a row.” Subhaanallah! It is stated further that “it is the compensation for the sins committed in the past year.” Subhaanallah! (Muslim Shareef)

Guide for fasting: It is a special Sunnah to fast on the 9th and the 10th, or the 10th and the 11th if one has genuine reason for it. The jews fast on the 10th only, therefore, the Muslims must differentiate themselves from the jews by fasting a day more than them. One must follow the sacred Sunnah while observing the sacred day of Ashura in order to obtain all the rewards. A Muslim must never do anything which is similar to that of the non-Muslims.

2nd duty: Arranging special meal and clothing for the family on that day

Sacred Hadees Shareef: If one arranges special meal and clothing for one’s family on the sacred day of Ashura, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala shall grant him abundance of wealth throughout the year.” (Tabarani Shareef, Shu’abul Eemaan lil Baihaqi, Masaba bis Sunnah , Muminke Mahwa Sal o Amali)

Guide for dining and wearing: As one fasts on the 9th and 10th, so one should arrange the special meal in the dinner and Sahri on the night following the 9th day. The best of all foods is the Sunnah foods. Besides, one must follow the Sunnah way of dining like using Dastarkhana (Brown dining mat made from goat hide is Sunnah), saying “Bismillahi wa ‘Aala Barakatillah” before eating, putting a pinch of salt in the tongue before eating, taking food from the right side of the plate and not from the middle, plucking and taking food from the Dastarkhana when spilled out, licking the plate using the finger and the finger itself after finishing the meal and lastly, putting a pinch of salt in the tongue again before wrapping up. There are more Sunnahs to follow while dining like drinking in three breaths, taking food as much as one-third of the stomach, water for the second and nothing for the third part of the stomach, finishing the meal while having desire and capability to eat more and so on.

One should say “Alhamdulillahillaji at-amana wasaqana wa ja’alana minal muslimeen” after finishing the meal. Using wooden utensils and brown Dastarkhana which is made from goat hide are some especial Sunnahs. Besides, one must wear Sunnah attire for obtaining the rewards for wearing special dress on the sacred day of Ashura. One shall not obtain any reward if one follows the way of the non-Muslims while eating and wearing on the sacred day of Ashura.

You can collect the Sunnah foods, clothing and other Sunnah products from the International Sunnah Promotion Center run by Muhammadia Jaamia Shareef.

3rd duty: Taking bath

Sacred Hadees Shareef: “Those who takes a bath on the day of Ashura with an intention to observe the day shall be safe from all diseases except death itself, laziness and distress.” Sub’haanallah!

Rules of Sunnah for bathing: Before taking the bath, it is a sacred Sunnah to massage olive oil on the body.  First, one should apply oil with his point finger on his right eyelid and right eyebrow and then on the left eyelid and left eyebrow. Then one should apply oil on one’s hair. Again, before using oil on the beard, first one should put oil again on his right and left eyebrow respectively, then on his mouche (under lips beard). After that, he should start with his beard from the right side and then that of the left side. One should always start from the right side while using oil on the beard or hair.

After using oil, one should brush one’s teeth with Miswak. Then one should take water with the right hand and wash both hands up to the wrist well. Then one should perform ablution the way one does before Swalaat except washing the feet. As we fast on the sacred day of Ashura, we should be careful with sniffing water with the nose while performing ablution so that water doesn’t get too high to reach all the way down to the stomach through the connecting way between the nasal cavity and throat. Also one should not gurgle while rinsing one’s mouth if he is fasting.

Once the ablution is performed in the prescribed way, one should pour water on one’s head to rinse one’s hair. The water must reach the root of the hair even if one’s hair is long and tied up in a bun or a braid. After that, one should pour water thrice on the right shoulder and then thrice on the left should so that the whole body is drenched. Then one should wash one’s belly button, armpit and groin areas. If one wears a ring, one should wash down that area too. It is a sacred Sunnah to use shower sponge made from the sponge gourd skin for rubbing the body and pumice stone for the feet. Also, finishing the ablution with one Mudd (625 grams) water and finishing the bath with less than five Mudds (3125 grams) water is a sacred Sunnah. One should never waste water. After finishing the bath, one should move slightly from the place of bath and then wash both feet thrice and wipe the body.

Using oil in hair is another sacred Sunnah. One should put oil in the eyebrows first, then on the eyelids and hence on the hair.

All the items necessary for performing the bath in the Sunnah way are listed below. One can collect it from the International Sunnah Promotion Center run by Muhammadia Jaamia Shareef Madrasa. You can order it either over phone or online in their website. They deliver to everywhere in Bangladesh.

4th Duty: Applying Kohl in the eye

Sacred Hadees Shareef: “Whoever applies Kohl in the eyes on the sacred day of Ashura shall gain immunity from every eye diseases for one year.” Subhaanallah! (Maqasid-e-Hasana, Shu’abul Eemaan, Dailami, Ma Sabata bis-Sunnah)

Sunnah of applying Kohl: There are two ways one can apply Ithmid Kohl (Musk mixed Kohl). First one is to apply thrice in the right eye and then thrice in the left eye. Another way is to apply once in the right eye and then once in the left eye; again, twice in the right eye and twice in the left eye.

One should follow either of the two ways to apply Ithmid Kohl in the eye. One can collect the original Ithmid Kohl and related accessories like the Kohl container and the Kohl stick from the International Sunnah Promotion Center. One can place the order over phone as well as online in their website.

5th Duty: Feeding fasting Muslims in Iftar

Sacred Hadees Shareef: “If one dines a fasting Muslim on the sacred day of Ashura in the Iftar, one shall be given rewards as if he dined the entire Ummah of ‘Habeebullah Swallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam.” Subhaanallah!

Muhammadia Jaamia Shareef Madrasa holds a grand Iftar feast where thousands of Muslims join from all over Bangladesh every year on the sacred day of Ashura. One can make financial contribution to that program if one intends to avail the aforementioned reward. Following are a few packages for making contribution to the grand Iftar feast:

Iftar package 1: BDT 300

Iftar package 2: BDT 500

Iftar package 3: BDT 1000

6th duty: Taking care of the orphan and wiggling hands on their heads out of love and care, feeding the hungry and serving water to the thirsty

Sacred Hadees Shareef: If one takes care of the orphan, feeds the hungry and serves water to the thirsty, Allah Pak Sub’hanahu wa Ta’ala shall feed one on the divine Dastarkhan (dining mat) and serve drink from the Salsabeel fountain in Jannat. (Khutbate ibn Nubata)

The 5th and 6th duties are comparatively harder to perform than the other four duties because if one feeds the non-practicing, derailed orphans or hungry people, one shall not be given the rewards. Finding the right orphans and hungry Muslims who retain the pure faith is very hard. So the easiest way to avail all the rewards of the sacred day of Ashura is to make contribution to Muhammadia Jaamia Shareef Madrasa for the grand feast of Ashura.

Following are a few orphan packages for making contribution:

Orphan package 1: BDT 500

Orphan package 2: BDT 1000

Orphan package 3: BDT 1500

It is the foremost obligation for every Muslim to duly perform the duties of the sacred day of Ashura and obtain the satisfaction of Allah Sub’hanahu wa Ta’ala and Noor-e-Mujassam ‘Habeebullah ‘Hu’dur Pak Swallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam.
