Fatwah of Hijab being Fard-e- Ayeen: Conditions of Dween Islam before Hijab was made compulsory

Sayeedul Mursalin, Imamul Mursalin, Rahmatullil Alamin, Nur-e-Mujassam, Akhiri Rasul Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam did Hizrat to Madina from Makka and the instructions for Hijab came in to effect in the 3rd, 4th or 5th year of the Hizri calendar. Most of the Muztahids opine that it in the month of Zilquad in the 5th Hizri.

Before Hijab was introduced, situation in Arab and the whole world was deplorable. Entire society was suffering from corruption, injustice, open sex and all other possible vices. Even during Bani Israyel period, things were in the worst shape because of the absence of Hijab.  Following are some of the references from those turmoil days:

An Incident concerning Hazrat Ibrahim Alaihi Was Salam

and hazrat Sarah Alaiha Was Salam and

the Penalty for being Be-Purdah

[84-89]

*****

Meaning: Described by Hazrat Abu Hurayrah RDA. Hazrat Nabi Karim Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said that Hazrat Ibrahim AS went for Hizrat taking Hazrat Sarah AS along and entered in such a habitat where there was a bad ruler. The ruler was informed that Hazrat Ibrahim as has entered the city with a beautiful woman. The ruler sent his messenger to Him (Ibrahim AS) and inquired in to who the Lady was with him? Hazrat Ibrahim AS replied, “my sister.” Then he returned to hazrat Sarah AS and said, “You can’t prove me wrong now for I have told them you are my sister. I can swear there is none else on this earth now except you and I who are Mu’mins. Therefore you and I are dweeni brothers and sisters.”

And then, as per the ruler or the Emperor’s instructions, Hazrat Sarah AS was sent to him. The Emeor approached toward her. Hazrat Sarah did her ablution and stood for saying her prayers. She urged to Allah: “O Lord! I have placed my full faith unto thee and your Rasul Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and have protected myself from all except my husband. You don’t bestow any power to this non-believer over me.” Hearing this, the Emperor fainted and fell on the ground, stamping. Hazrat Sarah AS uttered, “My Lord! If this culprit dies now, people would blame I have killed him.” The ruler got back his senses. This happened twice or thrice while the ruler exclaimed, “Swear upon Lord! You have sent me a Satan!” (Nauzu Billah!) Send her back to Hazrat Ib rahim AS and give Him Hazrat Hazira as a Hadia or gift.” Hazrat Sarah AS returned to Hazrat Ibrahim AS and commented, “Did you know that Allah has humiliated, degraded and frustrated the Emperor, and not only that he has gifted you a Khadima (nurse).”

(Bukhari Sharif, Kitabul Buyu Bab-e-Shirail, Mamluki Minal Harbiyi wa Hibatihi Wa Itquihi, Fathul Baari, Umdatul Quari, Irshadus Saree, Sharhul Quirmani, Taeesirul Bari)

In this, the integrity, self-control and respect for Hijab on the part of Hazrat Sarah AS has been vividly reflected while the odd ruler was penalized, humiliated and degraded for violation of Hijab or purdah.

Hijab of Hazrat Isaa Alaihi Was Sallam’s mother

Hazrat Maryam Alaiha Was Sallam

Allah Does mention in His Quarn Sharif:

*****

Meaning: “O my Habib Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam! Please do describe in this book about Hazrat Maryam Alaihas Salam, when she separated herself from her family members and took shelter at a place in the east, then to have cover from them, she did Purdah on herself. Then, to her, I sent my soul (Hazrat Jibrael Alaihis Salam) who displayed himself in the shape of a complete human being. Hazrat Maryam AS said, “I seek the shelter of the most merciful Allah, if you ar Allh fearing. He replied, “I am rather sent from your Allah! In this, I shall render you a Holy son.” Hazrat Maryam AS said, “How could I have a son? No human did ever touch me nor did I cross my bounds.” He assured, “It would just happen.  Your creator said, “It’s easy for me and I should like to do it for public demonstration and as a token of mercy from my side. This is rather something pre-destined.” And then she conceived in her ‘Rehem Sharif’ and with that she left for a place farther. (Sura Maryam/16-22) ….. QFEQ

The integrity, self-control and respect

for Hijab on the part of

Hazrat Abdullah Alaihis  Salam

When our Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam father Hazrat Abdullah Alaihis  Salam reached the age of marriage, many of the aristocrat arab women proposed to marry him. Some started standing on street corners with a view to watching him. Even when Jobihullah, Hazrat Abdullah Alaihis  Salam married Hazrat Amina Alaihis  Salam, Yet there was one lady named Fatima binta Nur Al khusyamia who wanted to marry him and wanted his company. But Hazrat Abdullah Alaihis  Salam did not pay any heed to that and headed toward his home. Straightway he did not look at any woman nor did he express any interest toward them. Such was his self respect, personality and self control, because he would be the respected father of our Rasul Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.

Following are some discussions on it:

[91-94]

*****

Meaning: Hazrat Abu Nuayim Rahamatullhi Alaihi described it from Murfu reference from Hazrat Abdullah Ibne Abbas RDA who says that Huzoor Pak Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam described about His respected parents, saying, “My honourable father and mother never indulged themselves in any undesired or indecent activities. (Ibne Asakir, Kanzul UmmaL, Al-Barahinul Qatyah Fi Mawlidi Khairil Bariyiah Lill karamat Ali Joinpuri Rahamatullhi Alaihi, Nashrut-e-Tweeb).

[95-98]

*****

Meaning: Huzoor Pak Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “All the time Allah was transfering me from the Holy surface to the Rehem Mubarak which was secret and well organised from before and was while there were two wings, I used to be in the best one. That means, when my ‘Nasabnama’ there used to be two children of some parents, then I used to ride or be in the ‘Rehem Sharif’ of the best of these two. (Al-Barahinul Qatyeah Fi Maulidi Khairil Baryeah, Mawahibul Ladunnya, vol 1, page-13, Sirat-e- Halabiah, vol 1, page-31, Nashrut-e-Tweeb, page-14, 15).

[99-101]

*****

Meaning: It has been told in the book named ‘Tahqiqul Maqam Ala Kifayatil Awwam that Huzoor Pak Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, **** meaning “I was always being transferred from the back of Holy men to the Rehem Sharif of Holy women’. From this Hadith sharif, most of the Alims have described that the Father and Grand Father and Great Grand father and Mother, Grand Mother and Great Grand Mother up to Hazrat Adam Alaihis Salam and Hazrat Hawa Alaihis Salam al were extremely Holy and none were Kafirs. Because ‘Twaharat’ or Holyness is only available but with a Mu’min. (Tafsirul Kabir, vol13, page-39, 40, Al-Barahinul Qatyeah Fi Maulidi Khairil Baryiah, Tahqiqul Maqam Ala Kifayaatil Awwam)

From the above, it is evident that none of the respected grandparents of Huzoor Pak Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam were ill-doers, sinners or without Hijab. Some of them were Nabi, some Rasuls and others Wali Allah.

[102-105]

Meaning: It has been described that certainly Hazrat Abdullah Jabihullah Alaihis Salam was passing beside a woman belonging to Bani Asad clan, who stood beside the Qa’ba Sharif. Her name was Ruquaiqa Bintu Nawfaal or Qutaila as found in some other descriptions. Quatailh or Ruquaiqa both names are “Sigah of Tasgir”. When she looked at Hazrat Abdullah Jabihullah Alaihis Salam, she got carried away aboy the good looks of him! She started offering, “O Hazrat Abdullah!  If you would come to me, I promise, I would pay for all those 100 camels those were sacrificed for your life.” Holiness and shyness became stronger in Hazrat Abdullah Alaihis salam. Therefore he defied the woman and left the place at once. (Al-Barahinul Qatyeah Fi Maulidi Khairil Baryiah, Mawahibul Ladunnya, vol 1, page-197, Siaratu Ibne Hisham, Sirate Halabia)

[106-108]

Meaning: Incident of a particular day. Hazrat Abdullah Alaihis Salam was passing near a woman named Khus’aamia who was a prominent astrologer. This woman was very rich and coutious too. She deceitfully wanted to be nearer Hazrat Abdullah Alaihis Salam and hence proposed for a wedding. Hazrat Abdullah Alaihis Salam was not deceived but made an excuse of throwing stones to go home and said, “Would see her later.” Coming home, Hazrat Abdullah Alaihis Salam stayed with Hazrat Amina Alahis Salam. Through this, Nur-e-Muhammadi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam moved from the back of Hazrat Abdullah Alaihis Salam to the Holy Rehem Sharif of Hazart Amina Alahis Salam.

Hazart Amina Alahis Salam became pregnant. Nur Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam was resting in peace in the Holy Rehem Sharif of Hazart Amina Alahis Salam. Then one day, Hazarat Abdullah Alaihis Salam was passing beside  that woman called Khus’aamia, who did not find that piece of Nur on the forehead of Hazarat Abdulah Alaihis Salam. She asked then, “O Abdullah Alaihis Salam! After leaving me hurriedly the other day, did you meet any woman?”  “Yes”, replied Hazrat Abdullah Alihis salam, “It was my wife, Hazrat Amina bintu Ohab Alaihis Salam that night.” Then Khus’aamia told “now that I won’t need anything from you, Hazrat Abdullah Alaihis Salam. Initially I saw the piece of Noor Mubarak on your face, so I proposed. But now I find it is already with some other woman’s good luck!” (Al-Barahinul Qatyeah Fi Maulidi Khairil Baryiah, Mawahibul Ladunnya, vol 1, page-19, Nashrut-e-Tweeb)

Meaning: In other some other descriptions, it has been said that, the woman who offe4r5ed herself to Hazrat Abdullah Alaihis salam was a sister of waraka Bin Noufell RadiAllahu Anhu, who was a cousin of Hazrat Khadizatul Kubra RadiAllahu Anha. Another reference says, that woman was from the Adabiya clan and was called Laila. The gist is: all these women were separate individuals, who offered themselves to Hazrat Abdullah Alihis Salam. (Al-Barahinul Qatyeah Fi Maulidi Khairil Baryiah.)

From the above description it is clear that the parents or anybody senior to Hazrat Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam were all very polished, decent in nature and did possess all good human qualities. Even before the advent of Islam, those who were liked by Allah and were close, were all very decent, purdahwala and holy in nature.

Before the advent of Islam, in the Dark Age (Ayam -e jahiliah) there was nothing calle4d Hijab. men and women did Twaf around baitullah Sharif shamelessly being nude. Hadith Sharif says:

[110-115]

*****

Meaning: It is definite that Hazrat Abu Hurayrah Radiallau Anhu says, “When Hazrat Abu Bakr Radiallau Anhu was made the Aamir of Hajj by Hazrat Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam, he (Hazrat Abu Bakr Radiallau Anhu) sent me along with other announcers on the day of Qurbani to Makkah to declare that, after this year, no Mushrique would be allowed to do Hajj of Baitullah Sharif and nobody would be allowed to do Tawaf without clothes on. Hazrat Humayid Ibnu Abdir Rahman Rahamatullah Alaihi says, “After this,  Hazrat Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam sent Hazrat Ali Radiallahu Anhu behind Hazrat Abu Bakr Radiallahu Anhu to declare the 1st Stanza of Sura Barayat.” Hazrat Hurayrah Radiallahu Anhu says, “Then along with us,  Hazrat Ali Radiallahu Anhu declared on the Qurbani Eid Day in Makkah that, after this year, no Mushrique would be allowed to do Hajj and none would be allowed to do Tawaf without clothes on. (Bukhari Sharif, Quitabus Salah Baab u Ma Yasturu Minal Awrah, Fathul Bari, Umdatul Quiari, Irshadus Saree, Sharhul Quirmani, Tahsirul Bari)

[116-120]

*****

Meaning: Described by Hazrat Abdullah Ibnu Abbas Radiallhu Anhu. He says, “Women used to do Tawaf around Baitullah Sharif without clothes on and used to say, ‘who would lend me a piece of cloth?’ This meant she would protect her modesty with that,’ and also added that, ‘today a part or full is opening but whichever portion being opened, I shall never make it halal.’ Then appeared that Ayat Sharif, “You wear decent clothes during every prayer.” (Muslim Sharif, Quibaut Tafsir, Muslim Bi Sharhun Nabbi, Fathul Mulhim lish Shibbir Ahmad Uthmani, Fathul Mulhim Lit Taqui Uthmani, Al Mufhim)

The Condition of Ummul Mu’minin Rwadiallahu Ta’ala Anhunnah

before the Introduction of Hijab

Hadis Shareef has it that,

[121-145]

*****

Meaning: Described by Hazrat Anas Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanhu. He says, “On the occasion of the ‘Olima’ (Post marriage reception) of Hazrat Jainab Binte Jahash Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanha, Hazrat Rasooulallah Swallallahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam arranged for some meals of meat and bread. Then sent me to invite people for food. A group came, took food and went out. Then came another, similarly ate and went off and then again I looked for people yet for food. There were none left. I said, “Yea Rasooulallah Swallallahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam! I find no people left for food.” He replied, “Then close the meals.” Three people were still inside the room, gossiping. Then Hazrat Nabi Karim Swallallahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam came out and headed toward the Huzra Shareef of Hazrat Ayesha Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanha. “As Salamu Alaikum Yea Ahlal Bayeet Wa Rahmatullah! Replied Hazrat Ayesha Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanha, “Wa Alaika Wa Rahmatullah, May Allah bless you, How did you find your guest?” This way he visited all Huzra Shareefs one after another and told the same word like he did with Hazrat Ayesha Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanha. All others greeted Rasooulallah Swallallahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam similarly and replied same way like Hazrat Ayesha Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanha did. Then returned Hazrat Rasooulallah Swallallahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam and found those three still gossiping in the room. Hazrat Rasooulallah Swallallahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam was very shy and finding them, He felt shy again (to tell them anything) and went out. He again stepped in to the door of Hazrat Ayesha Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanha. Then, I don’t exactly remember, somebody else or I gave Rasooulallah Swallallahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam the news that everyone had left. He returned, keeping one step Mubaarak inside and the other out, drew curtain in between us- at this time, Allah Did send (Nazeel) the Ayat on hizab. (Bukhari Shareef, Qitabut Tafsir Suratul Ahzab, Fathul Bari, Umdatul Qari, Irshadus Saari, Sharhul Qirmani….)

[146-151]

*****

Meaning: Described by Hazrat Anas Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanhu. He said, ‘Hazrat Umar Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanhu says, “I urged, “Ya Rasooulallah Swallallahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam! Good and bad both kind of people do visit you. If you would kindly instruct the Ummul Mu’minins to maintain ‘hijab’- it would be all the better.” (Bukhari Shareef, Qitabut Tafsir Suratul Ahzab, Fathul Bari, Umdatul Qari, Irshadus Saari, Sharhul Qirmani, Taisirul Bari)

[152-157]

*****

Meaning: Described by Hazrat Ayesha Rwadiallahu Ta’ala ‘Aanha. The Lady Wives of Hazrat Rasooulallah Swallallahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam, The Ummul Mu’minins used to go out at night time for personal requirements. And Hazrat Umar Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanhu often remarked, “Your Ladies should be (kept) under hijab.” But Hazrat Rasooulallah Swallallahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam yet did not do it. In one night, during Isha time, one of the Lady Wives of Hazrat Rasooulallah Swallallahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam, Ummul Mu’minin Hazrat Sawda Binte Jam’a Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanha came out for some personal requirements. She was tall. Hazrat Umar Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanhu marked it, call her and said, “Oh Hazrat Sawda Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanha! You couldn’t hide yourself. I recognized you.” He did so with an expectation that there shall be and Ohi from Allah on this. And then Allah sent this Ayat Shareef on Pardah (Hijab).

[158-180]

*****

Meaning: Narrated by Hazrat Iyesha Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanha. She says, “After the proclamation of Hijab’s rules, once Hazrat Sawda Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanha went out at night time for personal requirements. She was healthy enough to be recognized by people. Hazrat Umar Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanhu traced Her and called Her, saying, “Oh Hazrat Sawda Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanha! Swear upon Allah! You couldn’t hide yourself from our looks! Now see, how you would make it (outing)?” Hazrat Iyesha Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanha continues, “On this deliberation, Hazrat Sawda Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanha came that. At this time, Hazrat Rasooulallah Swallallahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam was taking dinner at my place. He was holding a piece of bone at that moment. Hazrat Sawda Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanha entered and narrated, “Ya Rasooulallah Swallallahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam! I went out for personal reasons. Hazrat Umar Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanhu called me and delivered so and so wards to me.” Hazrat Iyesha Rwadiallahu Ta’aala ‘Aanha continues, “At that moment, Allah sent an Ohi on Him. When the Ohi was over, He was still holding that piece of bone, didn’t leave it.” Hazrat Rasooulallah Swallallahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam commented, “Certainly you have been allowed to go out when needed (not just like that).

Message from Allah:

Either you express or conceal certain things, Allah is aware of all. Lady Wives of the Nabi and Rasool have no sins regarding their father, sons, brothers, nephews (both brothers and sisters), common women and maids. Fear Allah! certainly He is observant above all.

(Bukhari Shareef, Qitabut Tafsir Suratul Ahzab, Fathul Bari, Umdatul Qari, Irshadus Saari, Sharhul Qirmani, Taisirul Bari, Muslim Shareef, Sharhun Nabbi, Al-Mufheem, Ahkamul Quran lil Qurtubi, Tafsirut Twabari, Tafsir-e-Ibne Qasir, Tafsirul Mazhari, Tafsirul Khazeen, Tafsirul Baghbi, Tafsir-e-Madariqut Tanzil, Tafsir-e-Ruhul Mayani, Tafsir-e-Ruhul Bayan, Tafsirul Manar, Tafsirul Samarkandi, Shayekhzada, Hashiatu Jamal Alal Jalalain).

From the references quoted above, it is found that the Ummul Mu’minin were equally sober and decent in their conducts even before the Hijab rules were formally proclaimed. And after it was done, the compliance was stricter; even did not come out of their houses without sheer necessity.
